Melbourne's West is as close as 3 km from Melbourne's Central Business District and its furthest point is about 40 km.


Public Transport

Melbourne's West is well serviced by trains, trams and buses, and most areas within the region are easily accessed on public transport.  From Flinders Street and Southern Cross Stations, the region is accessed via the Werribee, Broadmeadows, Williamstown and Sydenham train lines.

All our shopping villages are serviced by the metropolitan train and bus systems and some are also serviced by trams. Our shopping centres are all serviced by buses from their nearest train station.

Public Buses operate from Melbourne Airport to various areas in Melbourne's West. Information on destinations and schedules can be obtained from the information desks within the airport, or Metlink.

Coach services from Sydney and Adelaide with Firefly Coaches stop at Footscray Shopping Centre. From Footscray there are regular buses, trams and trains into Melbourne's CBD and other areas of Melbourne's West.

By Plane

Passengers arriving at Melbourne (Tullamarine) or Avalon airports will drive through Melbourne's West to arrive in Melbourne City. Please see Melbourne’s West Map.

Public Buses operate from Melbourne Airport to various areas in Melbourne's West. Information on destinations and schedules can be obtained from the information desks within the airport, or Metlink.

By Car

The road network of Melbourne's West is excellent and easy to navigate. Whether you are moving in, out or around the region your drive is sure to be a pleasure.

From South Australia or Western Victoria you will travel into Melbourne via the Western or Princess Freeways, both major arterial roads of Melbourne's West.

From NSW or Northern Victoria via the Hume Highway, the easiest route into Melbourne is via the Western Ring Road connecting at Broadmeadows. While this route is a little longer in distance it is sure to save you time, around 30 minutes.

When you drive around Melbourne's West, no point in the region is more than 30 minutes from your point of origin.

By Ferry

Ferry services operate across Port Phillip Bay to and from the seaport village of Williamstown. Additionally, two companies operate daily services to and from Southgate in Melbourne's CBD and one operates a weekend service to and from St. Kilda.

By Bicycle

Bicycle paths provide access to some of the West's most popular attractions including Williamstown and Altona Beach, the Maribyrnong River and Werribee Park.

There are numerous bike paths throughout Melbourne’s West, and most are inter-linked allowing riders to tour almost the entire region by bicycle.  The main bike paths are easily accessed from the city, including the Moonee Ponds Creek Trail, the Maribyrnong River Trail and the Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail (also known as Bay Trail).


At the Westgate Bridge a bicycle punt runs across the Yarra River on weekends and public holidays (10am - 5pm), linking cyclists to Westgate Park and the Bay Trail to Williamstown and beyond. The punt also provides access to the Maribyrnong River Trail.  For more information on the punt phone 0419 999 458.
