At Werribee Open Range Zoo animals from the
grasslands of Australia, Africa and Asia live in conditions as
close as possible to those they encounter in their natural habitats.
Developed around the beautiful and picturesque
Werribee River, this 200 hectare property has become an open range
zoo of international standing which provides visitors with a truly
unique wildlife encounter.
Our visitors undertake a 50 minute guided Wildlife
Safari, which takes them amongst the animals and provides superb
opportunities for "close up" encounters. Trained Safari
Guides provide visitors with a personal and informed interpretation
of our magnificent animals.
Take a trip through the African Savanna, where
rhinos, giraffe, zebra and eland all share the magnificent river
flood plain. Experience the African waterhole, Australia's only
drive through hippo exhibit and the new 'Lions on the Edge', where
you come face to face with these magnificent cats. See Meerkats,
Cheetah, Vervet Monkeys and serval other wild cats, all linked
by a series of waterways on the African Walking Trail.
Explore the Australian exhibit, home to kangaroos,
emus and wallabies. Learn about the Western Plains grasslands
on the Volcanic Plains Walk and experience the evolving recreation
of this endangered habitat (less than 1% of grasslands remain
in Victoria).
Enjoy lunch at the Meerkat Bistro & Function
Centre or bring a picnic and relax in the exquisitely landscaped
surrounds.
