The Bay Trail

The Bay Trail (also known as Hobsons Bay Coastal Trail) is a 23km cycling and walking trail that stretches from underneath the Westgate Bridge in Spotswood to Skeleton Creek in Altona Meadows.

The trail passes through some wonderful landscapes as it meanders its way along the coast, and through the villages of Williamstown and Altona.

Some of the key sites and attractions along the Bay Trail include:

To help navigate the trail, a series of trail markers have been installed along the route. Based on a nautical theme and constructed from recycled timbers, the panels on the markers tell stories of the natural and cultural history of the area.

The trail offers plenty of opportunities to refresh and re-energise at the many cafes and eateries in Williamstown and Altona. And toilets are well placed along the trail.

The trail connects with the Bay Trail on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay via a punt across the Yarra River that operates on weekends and public holidays from 10:00am – 5:00pm.  This provides riders with one continous trail around the bay, from Altona all the way to Carrum (69km).  Note the punt may not operate during inclement weather or high winds.

A map of the trail can be downloaded from the Hobsons Bay City Council website.

Check out the Bicycle Victoria website for more information on the trail route.
